Upon publishing a front-page headline claiming the President; Samia Suluhu Hassan will not be standing for the presidency in 2025; the Uhuru paper headline was sidelined after the government spokesman Gerson Msigwa clarified that the president had not at any time made such a declaration. He added that the paper had made what he called a professional and legal mistake.
The government spokesman’s statement was followed by a two weeks suspension to the Uhuru newspaper. This suspension was the first suspension to be issued to a media house since President Samia Suluhu Hassan took office. Gerson Msigwa also urged media houses to comply with the media regulations which are already in place as well as to observe ethics.
