Upon the announcement of the first lockdown in 2020, the government issued Standard operating procedures that hindered individuals and companies from offering direct help to Ugandans. It instead required them to bring all the money and any support they wanted to offer to Ugandans to the Covid-19 task force.
Billions of Uganda shillings were collected, Food was offered, sanitary equipment was also donated among several other items.
Unfortunately, till now, there has not been any report to show how these resources were utilized. The initiative for social and Economic Rights has released a report citing transparency challenges in Uganda and wrong priorities in regard to utilizing the Covid-19 donations. It was on this ground that they recommended the government of Uganda to publicize an account of how the Covid-19 donations were Utilized.
