Shortly after the decease of Jacob Oulanyah the former speaker of the parliament of Uganda; a number of people had come out to express their interest in the post of Speaker of the parliament of Uganda. Among the prominent names that made those with interest included but were not limited to Anita Among the current deputy speaker of parliament, Oboth Oboth, Shamim Malende, Assuman Basalirwa among other parliamentarians.
A few people such as the current Minister of Health Jane Ruth Acheng withdrew their interest. But amidst this front and back scuffle; the imprisoned members of parliament Allan Ssewanyana and Mohamed Ssegirinya through their lawyers have expressed interest in the contested post.
Though the chance for these winning the contest is very minimal because of the fact they belong to the opposition side which is also the minority group in parliament; their participation is likely to present a special precedent in case they successfully contest. They will be required to speak to the parliament formally granting them an opportunity they have never had before.
