Every year the Economist Intelligence unit produces a number of world ranking among which includes the Democratic rankings of the whole world. The rankings are based on the electoral process and pluralism, functioning of government, political participation, civil liberties as well as political culture.
In 2021; the top five most democratic countries in the whole world were; Norway, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, and Iceland respectively. The worst performing democracies were Afghanistan, Myanmar, North Korea, and the Democratic Republic of Congo respectively.
According to the 2021 report, here are the best-performing democracies on the African continent.
1. Botswana
Botswana is one of the few middle-class economies on the African continent. The country is one of the top classic African safari destinations. Botswana ranked 30 of the most democratic countries in the whole world and first on the African continent.
2. South Africa
South Africa is the second-largest economy on the African continent. It is also ranked second among the strongest militaries on the African continent. South Africa was ranked the second most democratic country on the African continent and 44th in the whole world.
3. Namibia
Namibia is also among the top 5 self drive safari destinations on the African continent. The country was ranked 55th most democratic country in the whole world and third on the African continent.
4. Ghana
Ghana is home to the world’s largest artificial reservoir. It is also known for its exotic waterfalls, cocoa production, gold, and diamond mining. The west African state ranked 56th of the most democratic countries in the whole world and fourth on the African continent.
5. Lesotho
Lesotho is among the few surviving state kingdoms on the African continent. The South African country is very mountainous making it the country with the highest lowest point in the whole world. Lesotho was ranked 64th most democratic country in the whole world and fifth on the African continent.
6. Tunisia
Tunisia is most known as the country where the “Arab Spring” originated from. Besides its political fame, the country boasts of a number of ancient cities that attract tourists all year long. The country ranked 75th in the whole world and 6th on the African continent.
7. Malawi
Malawi is among the few landlocked African countries. The country was formerly known as Nyasaland. Like Uganda, Malawi is known for having friendly people. The country ranked 78th of the world’s most democratic countries and 7th on the African continent.
8. Zambia
Zambia is one of those African countries very rich in diversity but under-explored. The country still lives in the shadows of Zimbabwe when it comes to visiting victoria falls. Zambia was ranked the 79th most democratic country in the whole world and eighth on the African continent.
9. Madagascar
Madagascar is one of the few Island countries on the African continent. The country is among the leading tourist destinations on the African continent partly because of its white sand beaches and Marine life. Madagascar was ranked the 83rd most democratic country in the whole world and the 8th most democratic country in the whole world.
10. Senegal
The Africa Nations Cup 2021 champions were also able to secure for themselves a 10 ten slot in the most democratic countries on the African continent according to EIU. Senegal was ranked the 88th most democratic country in the whole world.
Other honorable mentions include Liberia ranked 90th in the whole world, Tanzania that ranked 92nd, Kenya that ranked 94th, Morocco that ranked 95th, Sierra Leone that ranked 97th, Uganda that ranked 100th, and Gambia ranked 101st respectively.
Burundi was ranked among the worst democracies in the whole world. Rwanda ranked 127th while Burundi ranked 149.
