Truck Traffic Diverted from Masindi-Paraa Road Following Karuma Bridge Closure

In response to urgent repairs needed for the Karuma Bridge, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has implemented significant traffic diversions affecting truck routes in the region. The bridge, which plays a crucial role in connecting Kampala to Gulu and the West Nile, was closed on May 6, 2024, due to identified defects requiring immediate intervention.

Initially, lorries, trailers, trucks, and buses were diverted to use the Luwero-Kafu-Masindi-Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) route to reach Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo. However, following extensive consultations with stakeholders, it has been resolved that the ecologically sensitive environment along the Masindi-Paraa route necessitates a change in traffic flow to minimize disruption to the local wildlife.

Effective Friday, May 24, 2024, all drivers of trailers, lorries, and trucks, except buses, are now advised to use an alternative route. The new diversion directs these vehicles to travel from Kafu to Masindi, then branch off to the left onto the Hoima-Biiso-Buliisa-Paraa road, continuing to Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo. This route is fully paved and reduces the distance traveled through Murchison Falls National Park by approximately 20 kilometers, significantly mitigating the impact on wildlife movement and behavior.

This strategic move underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Uganda’s rich wildlife heritage while ensuring the continued flow of goods and services. The government is also fast-tracking funding for the construction of a new bridge at Karuma, promising a long-term solution to the current transportation challenge. In the meantime, temporary repairs will be initiated to restore full traffic functionality at the Karuma Bridge.

The UNRA’s decision reflects a balanced approach to infrastructure maintenance and environmental conservation, ensuring that Uganda’s transport network remains robust without compromising its natural treasures.
