On Friday 19th August, the Response Innovation Lab (RIL), an organization which supports innovation in the humanitarian response in Uganda, together with Open Source for Equality (OSEQ) organized an awards event which took place at the prestigious Fairway hotel in Kampala.
The event was about networking and presenting of awards to the best individuals and groups which really worked well in their various projects.
There were three tracks which participated in this exercise and they included the Word of Mouth (WoM. Fm) led by Nyayic Fanny , Curious Learners track led by Deborah Aanyu and Uganda EMR track led by Mr. Samuel Lubwama.
The event started at 4pm with the arrival of guests and registration, Mr. Kabali Saul was in charge of this exercise. This was followed by welcome remarks from Mr. Jude Okongo. The guests then had a break to network with one another.
After the networking break, we had opening remarks from Rhian Mikisa who thanked people for participating in their different tracks. She also expressed gratitude to all those who completed their assignments and was also happy that people had turned up in big numbers for the event.
The participating track leaders were then called to the stage to talk about what transpired as they worked on their projects, the challenges they faced and the merits therein.
The first track was Word of Mouth (WoM fm) led by Nyayic Fanny and it was tasked with building different platforms using Audiopedia in different languages such as Luganda, Alur, etc. Audiopedia is an Open source platform developed by URIDU that provides expert audio content targeting marginalized women and girls on topics of health, nutrition, childcare and family planning. Every participant who completed an assignment in this track walked away with four hundred thousand shillings.
The second track was curious learning, led by Deborah Aanyu and it was basically about translating books into local languages of Luganda, Runyoro, Acholi and others. This group got 1.5 Million shillings and 450,000 shillings was given to each member for translating a book, while 100.000 shillings was given to those who contributed by translating a book into the audio form.
The third track was Uganda EMR, led by Mr. Samuel Lubwama. Uganda EMR is an electronic medical records system used in health facilities, hospitals and clinics across the country to store patient medical files electronically. This group received Two Million Shillings.
The certificates and awards were given out by Mr. Jude Okongo, Rhian Mikisa and the various track leads. After the awarding of prizes to the winners, the guests were asked to give their feedback via https://Bit.ly|3pTo2LLo.
This event was funded by URIDU, the European Union, the German Cooperation and giz.
The guests were later served with a meal which they enjoyed as they continued to network with one another, dancing to music and enjoying the cool ambience of Fairway hotel. The event ended at about 8pm.
