The Tororo district woman member of parliament, Honorable Sarah Opendi has sought leave from Parliament in order to work on the bill that she is set to introduce titled the Alcohol control bill 2022. According to Sarah Opendi, the purpose of the bill is to enact a comprehensive piece of legislation regarding alcohol in Uganda.
She is attempting to address the prevailing circumstances regarding the challenges caused by the excessive use of alcoholic drinks, and regulate the manufacture, importation, sale, and consumption of alcoholic drinks in Uganda.
The law seeks to address the issue of premises where alcoholic drinks can be sold as well as regulate the promotion and advertisement of alcoholic drinks in Uganda. In her submission, she said she cannot stop people from drinking alcohol but there must be set time frames to regulate people from drinking the whole day.
