Words mean nothing. But people mean things when they use the words.
You can easily miss the point when you try to find what people mean by merely looking at the dictionary meaning of words. It gets worse when your interpretation is from Luganda to another language. Luganda is a idiomatic language. Most of the meaning isn’t in the words said. One must have the ability to identify the message behind the words.
For example, phrases like “Batugudeko!” if interpreted can mean; “they have fallen on us” but the actual meaning of the phrase is being in a state where you find yourself overequipped for a particular challenge. Its close equivalent is being flatfooted.
Hoozambe is an idiomatic song. It is hard to capture its meaning by simply interpreting the words per their meaning. In a nutshell, it is a vulgar freestyle about masturbation. It is a conversation between Hoozambe and Shifula after finding her red-handed; masturbating. In her response, she asked him whether he masturbates too. “do you finish your problem by yourself?”, “do your goats cry by themselves? Yes they cry by themselves”. Her husband, “hajji” doesn’t satisfy her. Hoozambe exclaims; “May be we should call people from Gaza”
Gaza is one of the major slums in Kampala known for crime and drugs.
The challenge with such songs is you cannot interpret the whole lyrics because when you try to do that, you can easily lose the singer’s meaning or intention. The words are often mixed up with other phrases to hide the meaning.
