On March 20th, 2020, the president of Uganda; Yoweri Kaguta Museveni issued a directive for the closure of all schools. Early this month, the Ministry of Education and sports brought it to the public attention that schools will be opening by the end of September 2020.
However, this news has come with mixed emotions from parents, teachers, and the children as well. Though most of the fear has been in regard to tuition, there is another challenge that was unforeseen. Almost half of the population of the school-going girls in the Teso sub-region might not return to school
According to Christine Opolot the chairman of UNATU in Kumi, most of the girls have become sex workers while others have been married off. The different institutional stakeholders have called upon the parents to perform their duties in ensuring the children remain in school
