At least 14 people have been confirmed dead and 16 others got serious injuries in a bus accident that happened in the morning on Thursday along Kampala – Masaka highway.
According to Mr Ogwal Maxwell, Greater Masaka Regional Police Commander, a highway bus Registration Number UAX826M rammed into a stationery trailer Registration Number UAJ872N, UAD 446Q. The Bus was going to Kanungu District. The accident happened at 12:30am at Kamutuuza village which is about 12km to Masaka town. The bus was going to Kanungu and rammed into the trailer that was parked by the roadside.
The bus driver disappeared shortly after causing the accident. Mr. Ogwal adds that, the injured were rushed to Masaka regional referral hospital while the deceased were taken to the mortuary.
Among the deceased according to police by press time included Josephine Namulindwa, Mulindwa the bus conductor, Rev. Can Enoch Komunda, the former Dean of Kinkiizi Diocese and Claire Atuhairwe among others.
According to police statistics, over 113 people lost their lives and 254 others were seriously injuried in motor accidents along Kampala – Masaka highway since this year started. Most of the accidents occur at a section between Maya-Katende and Nabyewanga Trading Center near Lwera swamp at the border of Mpigi and Kalungu Districts.
According to Mrs. Najjuma Justine one of the supervisors, the bus driver could have slept off because he never realized that the trailer was parked. She adds that, the Bus driver was driving recklessly and some passengers had already complained about him but he never listened.
